Igbo religion is unified by shared beliefs, yet practices are locally rooted, often centred around the extended family as the primary unit of worship. Rituals and ceremonies may extend to the lineage or village level, with larger gatherings reflecting broader kinship and community ties.
At the heart of Igbo belief is a supreme god, Chukwu (the “Great God”), who watches over creation but seldom intervenes directly. No sacrifices are made to him directly, as he is viewed as the ultimate recipient of sacrifices offered to lesser gods. Known as Chukwu Okike (God of Creation) Amama Amasiamasi (The All Knowing God) Chineke Nke Igwe ( The God of the Heavens). He is revered as the creator of all things, and nothing was created without Him.
